The cultural and natural heritage of the Agrigento province
South-Central Sicily corresponds withe the chalky-sulphury area of Sicily. With the closure of the Strait of Gibraltar, deep layers of gypsum were formed, showing rich presences of sulphur. Therefore, the gypsum is the strongest element of landscape's characterization, as in a natural way, with typical hill formations, than in an artificial way, since the mortars and plasters of historical local architecture have been realized with gypsum. Sulphur indeed characterized the economy, life and culture during the passed century in South-Central Sicily, in so far as the extraction of the mineral marked the way of life of local collectivities.
South-Central Sicily's environment also conserves a vegetation only known by those who are familiar with it: traces of antic cultures now disused, plants of little-use names but that have been part of our local culture and to which are associated medical practices, antic beliefs and the echoes of antic civilizations. The knowing of such attars also presents today a notable commercial interest for the reproposal that could be done of the products themselves as of the transformed ones.
The province of Agrigento is characterized by numerous historical centers of high artistic and monumental quality (Sciacca, Caltabellotta, Licata, Naro, Campobello di Licata). The ethno-anthropological patrimony of the various territories of the province is also rich and little-considered (S. Biagio Platani). In the territory are also present some territorial contexts of high landscape and environmental value (Maccalube, Torre salsa, Scala dei Turchi, Siculiana, Monte Cammarata, le Pelagie), as well as archaeological ones (Eraclea Minoa, Entella, Monte Saraceno, S. Angelo Muxaro). Such "minor" heritages, reguarding to the «Valle dei Templi» (Temples Valley) of Agrigento, have been so far mortified by neglect and decay.
The laboratory, through guided visits and indoor activities, is aimed to highlight such a patrimony and make the participants discover the extraordinary civilization patrimony they represent.
