HISTORY

The fundation of the city has the origine during the arabic period (NAHR= Fire) in the IX century, the place was perfect by its strategic position. About the urbanistic plane of the city, its origine is almost lost, but is sure that in the higtest part of the town there would be the mosque and the fortress. About the constuction of the mosque could be reused as a chirstian church when the normands arrived to Sicily.

In 1233, thanks to the emperator Federico II is going to have its own coin and the Title of "Fulgentissima".

In 1366 Matteo Chiaramonte will have the power. Durig the period of the "Chiaramonte" and the age of the king Martino, Naro was a great potent also in the religious circle, being the moment of maximun glory.

The next phase is the period of the Catalano-aragonesi kings. In 1520, under the spanish domination, Carlos V gives to Naro an autonomic justice. But the plague during the middle of this century stops this development untill the XVII century, during this century is going to restart its cultural and artistic development thanks to the help of the principals religious orders, for example the Gesuists. But in the end of the 1700 the process of decline starts and wont stop because the suppression of this religious corporations and the abandon of the nobles families, leaving a great heritage.
